As Programme Manager for Innovate UK, Cherie Gardiner leads and manages the delivery of complex and high-profile innovation programmes within the manufacturing and materials sector, aiding UK businesses in the development and commercialisation of cutting-edge technologies and solutions. With a decade of experience in technical project management and manufacturing, she possesses a demonstrated ability to oversee communication strategies, engage diverse stakeholders, and achieve successful outcomes across academia, industry, public sector, and international organisations.
In addition to her role at Innovate UK, Cherie currently serves as a mentor for the Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng). Along with bringing valuable experience as a former Impact Assessor for the Research Excellence Framework (REF) 2021, where she contributed to the advancement and recognition of engineering excellence in the UK. Through these roles, Cherie remains committed to fostering innovation and supporting the growth of materials and manufacturing in the UK.
Dr Lorelei Gherman is a Knowledge Transfer Manager for Advanced Manufacturing, working within the Materials and Manufacturing team at Innovate UK Business Connect. Lorelei is the Project Manager for the Made Smarter Innovation Network, and is involved in Resource Efficiency for Materials and Manufacturing (REforMM) on the Resilient Supply Chains and World-Class Production sprints.
Having expertise in advanced manufacturing engineering and over 15 years of R&D experience, she worked on programmes including non-conventional machining, precision, micro- and bioengineering. She is passionate about supporting knowledge and technology transfer projects, bridging collaborations between academia and industry.
In previous roles, Lorelei has supported business and research development for low-carbon energy, sustainability and circular economy, where she worked with enterprises, manufacturing trading associations, chambers of commerce and local authorities. At Innovate UK Business Connect, Lorelei is keen to provide manufacturing opportunities support to enable innovation development.

As Head of Client Success, Chris works with Clients to realise their use cases, deliver their benefit cases, identify future use cases and align the technology roadmap of the platform to enable them.
Chris has a 30-year career operating at the Board level in some of the largest consumer goods companies in the world. He has personally led several Global Operating Model and IT transformation programmes to enable corporate strategy and deliver effectiveness and efficiency across all functions.
Scott is a Senior Manager within the Commercial Science Team of Diageo Innovation R&D. He leads a team of Scientists and Engineers whom explore and deliver new technical capability focussed on opening new consumer opportunities to grow Diageo’s broad portfolio of products.
Following his Chemistry PhD at the University of Southampton, Scott’s experienced both academic and commercial environments internationally within both Research and Development roles. Scott holds several granted patents which have been commercialised to create new product opportunities and launched many local and global products under Diageo brands.
Sofia Alves began her career as a research fellow at INEGI - Institute of Science and Innovation in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. During that time Sofia was involved in several research projects, she integrated the CINMarS - Combining Innovation in Maritime and Space project, a strategic initiative funded by the European Space Agency, and also was part of the winning proposal of the GENiALG project (Horizon 2020) among other proposals. After 3 years as a research fellow, Sofia initiated her PhD project with the University of Strathclyde, Compressive Mechanical Behaviour of Nitinol Wires used in Aortic Stent Grafts, a project with Terumo Aortics with the objective to experimentally characterise Nitinol (shape memory alloy) for medical applications. In 2020, after completing her PhD, Sofia joined the Weir Advance Research Centre as a research project manager. Since then, she has managed several research projects across the business ensuring the research objectives remain relevant to Weir and the successful implementation of resulting technology into the Weir businesses.
Sofia recently delivered the Innovate UK Smart Grant project High Productivity Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (HPWAAM), and is currently the project manager of the Additive Manufacturing for Repair and Re-use of Castings - AdCast project, also an Innovate UK Smart Grant project.
